Every surveyor's bag tells a story about how they work. Some carry half a hardware store; the best carry a disciplined kit where every item earns its place by generating findings or defending them. Here is the working inventory for recreational C&V work in 2026, from the non-negotiables to the digital layer that has quietly become as important as the hardware.
The non-negotiable core
- Moisture meter. The signature instrument. Understand what it is and is not: readings are relative indications influenced by laminate, coatings, and temperature, not absolute water percentages, which is why experienced surveyors map patterns (and verify with sounding) rather than quoting single numbers as gospel. Whichever you carry, know its behavior on cored versus solid laminate cold.
- Sounding tool. A phenolic hammer or dedicated sounding mallet for percussion-testing decks and hulls. The trained ear finds delamination and saturated core faster than any electronic instrument, and the meter-plus-sounding combination is what makes a moisture finding defensible in the report.
- Digital multimeter. AC and DC verification, continuity, voltage drop, battery state. Electrical findings dominate recreational surveys (ABYC E-11 is the most-cited standard in the fleet), and the meter is how impressions become measurements.
- Inspection camera / borescope. Behind liners, into tank spaces, down rudder tubes. Every space you can document is a limitation you do not have to disclaim.
- Serious flashlight, plus a headlamp. Underrated and irreplaceable. Most defects live in the dark.
- Hand tools: screwdrivers and bits for panel access, awl or pick for suspect wood, mirror on a stick, tape measure, blue tape for marking findings, knee pads, and nitrile gloves.
Safety kit (yours, not the boat's)
Surveyors work alone in yards, on ladders, around machinery, and occasionally aloft or afloat in bad footing. Non-slip boots, eye protection for grinding-adjacent yard environments, a PFD for sea trials on small boats, and the discipline to tell someone where you are. A CO detector clipped to the bag has earned its place for engine-space work.
Specialty instruments that earn their cost
- Thermal imaging camera. Moisture patterns, wet core, overheating electrical connections, and engine anomalies at a glance. Increasingly common, and a differentiator in your marketing as well as your findings.
- Corrosion reference electrode (silver/silver-chloride half cell). For hull potential readings on bonded metal boats and stern-drive work; corrosion surveys are a paid specialty of their own.
- Engine data access. Hull surveyors are not engine surveyors, but the ability to read hours and fault codes on common platforms sharpens the recommend-a-specialist call.
- Rigging tension gauge if you do sailboats and contract for rig checks at deck level.
The digital layer: the half of the kit that writes the report
Here is the shift the last few years made real: the capture workflow now determines your evening as much as the survey does. The old pattern, scattered phone photos, a paper pad, and memory, is why the average report takes 4.25 hours to write: half of that time is reconstruction.
- Systematic photo discipline. Shoot in a consistent vessel sequence, wide-then-detail on every finding, so the photo record mirrors the report structure instead of fighting it.
- Voice notes at the finding. Thirty seconds of dictation at the seacock beats an hour of trying to remember which seacock. Say the observation, location, and severity while your hand is on it.
- Structured capture apps. The current generation of tools turns the phone into the clipboard: notes, photos, and voice tagged to vessel systems in one place, feeding report software directly.
